JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - As the lone NCAA Division II program in a tournament field full of Division I schools, the Georgia Southwestern golf team held its own, finishing third on Tuesday at the 11-team Don Benbow Invitational played at Jacksonville Beach Golf Club.
The Hurricanes finished ahead eight of D-I programs, including: Cleveland State, Wisconsin Green-Bay, Bradley, Creighton, Florida A&M, Butler, Alabama State and Eastern Illinois.
Appalachian State and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) tied for the team title with scores of 585, ahead of GSW and Cleveland State by six strokes.
Josh Nichols of Appalachian State was the lone golfer to finish under par, shooting a 4-under 138 (65-73) to win individual medialist honors.
GSW's Craig Gibson tied for the low round of Day 2 with an even-par 71 to finish 5-over for the 36-hole tournament, tied for 12th out of 74 participants. Nate Gahman joined Gibson at 12th with rounds of 73 and 74.
J.P Griffin finished a stroke behind Gibson and Gahman with a 6-over 148 to hold third for GSW. Reese Moseley and John Wilson Gordon posted 151 scores to tie for 30th overall.
The Hurricanes return to the links on Sunday, Mar. 27, at the three-day Lander Bearcat Invitational in Greenwood, S.C.
