Hurricane standout Craig Gibson earned an invite to play in the Canadian Amateur Championship after firing a 4-over 292 at RedTail Landing Golf Club in the four-round qualifying tournament in Edmonton, Alberta last week.

The championship is in London, Ontario, Aug. 12-15 (View Craig's scorecard by clicking here).

"The first year I went to college, at Missouri Valley, I (medaled) at the nationals," Gibson said. "(But) this ranks pretty high (on my list of accomplishments). It’s the best amateur championship in Canada."

"I’m proud of him,” said GSW head golf coach Andrew Danna. “He works really hard and deserves every amount of success he gets. I think he’ll play real well in the Canadan Amateur Championship."

As for his strategy going into the tournament, Gibson - a junior at GSW - said winning would be a dream come true, but ultimately he just wants to play consistently.

"I’m just looking for four steady days," said Gibson, who was born and raised in Brooks, Alberta. "One (problem) I’ve had with tournaments is I always have one bad day — it’s usually the first day — so I’ve been trying to prepare mentally. It’s almost like I’m not ready for it, so I’m going to try to prepare a little more (ahead of time)."

Gibson and the Hurricanes open collegiate play on Sept. 6 at the Kiawah Island Invitational.
