Hurricanes blow through Opelika

OPELIKA, Ala. – The Georgia Southwestern men's golf team was hoping to capture the same on-course magic that allowed the Hurricanes to win the 2011 Kiawah Island Invitational earlier this month. The Blue & Gold conjured up that same magic at the RTJ Grand National Challenge and brought home their second victory in three weeks.

GSW's +12 (300) team score was good enough for first place by six strokes. West Georgia (+18) and Montevallo (+42) came in second and third respectively.

West Georgia's Matt Dyas was the individual winner shooting an even 72 during Saturday's action. Junior Nate Gahman and senior Craig Gibson finished tied for second one shot behind Dybas. Junior J.P. Griffin's four over gave the Hurricanes three players in the top 5.

The course average on the day was about +9 (81), and Georgia Southwestern placed four golfers below that average mark.

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National course has a national reputation. In 2009, Golf World Magazine gave the course its Reader's Choice Top Public Course award.  The Grand National course has also won several other awards from Golf Digest.
