GSW ranked #1 in southeast by Golfstat; spring schedule released

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern men's golf team ranks first in the southeast region and No. 6 in the country according to the latest Golfstat standings released Wednesday.

The Hurricanes have won three tournaments this fall and not lost to a D-II school.

Individually, GSW has three golfers ranked in the top seven of the region that includes 20 schools. 

Craig Gibson ranks third while shooting close to par with a 72.13. Gibson won the 90-player Aflac/Cougar Invitational Oct. 3-4. He has a pair of second place finishes to go along with the Aflac/Cougar title.

Gibson ranks 185th in the Golfstat Cup standings. The Golfstat Cup, presented to the top collegiate golfer based on scoring average and conditions, includes particpants in all NCAA Divisions, NAIA and junior colleges. Past winners of the Golfstat Cup include PGA Tour members Rickie Fowler (2007-08), Graeme McDowell (2001-02), Charles Howell (1999-2000), Luke Donald (1998-99) and Tiger Woods (1995-96).

J.P. Griffin ranks fourth in the southeast with a 72.88 scoring average. Griffin claimed a second-place finish at the season-opening Kiawah Island Invitational and tied for third at the Aflac/Cougar.

Nate Gahman ranks seventh in the region. His best finish was a tie for second at the RTJ Grand National Challenge on Sept. 17. Gahman's average score is 73.50.

GSW holds the lowest single-round score in the Peach Belt Conference this season with a 279 in the third round of the Aflac/Cougar led by Griffin's 66, which is the low round by an individual in the PBC this fall. 

The 'Canes final event of the fall is the Laker Invitational Oct. 24-25 in Hampton.

Play resumes in February for GSW with the second half of the season. Trips to Mississippi, Louisiana and South Carolina highlight the Hurricanes spring schedule.

GSW opens the second half of its season at the Frito Lay AT&T Intercollegiate hosted by Jackson State University Feb. 17-19 at Dancing Rabbit Golf Club in Philadelphia, Miss.

The following week Southwestern makes its first trip to "The Big Easy" for the University of New Orleans Mardi Gras Invitational at the TPC of Louisiana Feb. 27-28.

The Hurricanes stay closer to home for their next outing, the Southeastern Collegiate at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta, Mar. 12-13.

Mar. 26-27 GSW will be at the Bearcat Classic hosted by Lander University at Greenwood Country Club in Greenwood, S.C.

The season culminates at Callaway Gardens in Columbus Apr. 9-10 when Columbus State hosts the Peach Belt Conference Championships.
