Southeastern Stumble

VALDOSTA - Perhaps the hole was just too deep. The 5th-ranked Hurricanes, who opened Day 2 of the First Federal Southeastern Collegiate in 13th place, shot a 295 on Tuesday to move up two slots and finish 11th at the 14-team, three-round event.

The tournament field was strong with eight teams ranked in the top 25 and another three receiving votes in the latest NCAA Division II Coaches' Poll.

GSW finished 50 strokes behind 13th-ranked North Alabama for the top spot in the team standings at the par-72, 7,140-yard Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.

Tyler Chandler from North Alabama won the individual title after firing rounds of 67, 67 and 69 for a 13-under 203.

Craig Gibson shot the Hurricanes low score with a two-day total of 1-over 217. Teammate J.P. Griffin matched Gibson with a 72 and 73 in Rounds 2 and 3, respectively, but his 74 in the opening round placed him in a tie for 20th place overall, four slots behind Gibson. Travis Oestmann tied for 50th place in the 75-player field with an 11-over 227. Nate Gahman went 78-76-75 for a 13-over 229 and Christopher Hall finished with a 233.

The Hurricanes return to the links on Monday (Mar. 19) for the first and second rounds of the Bobcat Invitational hosted by Georgia College.
