SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. - Georgia Southwestern golfer J.P. Griffin birdied two of his final three holes on Wednesday to finish Round 2 at the NCAA Division II Championships with a 3-under 69.
Griffin is six strokes back, tied for eighth heading into the final round on Thursday.
Josh Creel from Central Oklahoma eagled No. 17 to finish Day 2 with a 2-under 70 and grab the lead in the tourney with an overall 9-under 135. He leads Eric Frazzetta from Chico State who shot a blistering 9-under 63 in the second round and takes an 8-under 136 into the final round. A pair of golfers are two strokes behind Creel at 7-under.
Griffin was tied for 23rd place in the 108-player field after Round 1 on Tuesday after shooting even par, but jumped 15 spots thanks to his six-birdie, three-bogey round on Wednesday.
The Glennville native has birdied nine different holes on the 7,092-yard par 72 Cardinal Club Golf Course including No. 17, which he has birdied both days. Holes No. 11 and No. 18 have given Griffin trouble. He has not finished par or better on either through the first two rounds.
