COLUMBUS - The Georgia Southwestern golf team climbed 12 spots in the standings over the course of Monday afternoon to finish Day 1 at the Aflac/Cougar Invitational in third place out of 17 teams. Craig Gibson led the Hurricane assult, holding second place in the 90-player field with a two-round score of 3-under 139.
Teammate Chris Hall tamed the par-71, 6515-yard Country Club of Columbus, as well, finishing three strokes behind Gibson with an even par, tied for fifth place.
Southwestern sits six strokes behind third-ranked Lynn University and four shots behind No. 4 Barry University. The top nine spots in the standings belong to teams ranked in the top 24 in the country. Only two teams in the tournament did not at least receive votes in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf NCAA Division II Coaches' Poll.
J.P. Griffin (73-74) and Nate Gahman (75-74) are tied for 28th and 40th, respectively for GSW. Freshman Chris Campos carded a 160 (82-78).
The Hurricanes return to the links Tuesday morning for the final round in Columbus.
