PINE MOUNTAIN - The Georgia Southwestern golf team shot rounds of 296 and 289 to finish the first day of the Peach Belt Conference Championships at Callaway Gardens in fourth place out of 11 teams.
The Hurricanes are in striking distance of the leader UNC Pembroke who shot a two-round total of 579, six strokes ahead of GSW. USC Aiken is in second with a 582 and Georgia College sits in third with a 584.
All-Peach Belt Second Team selection J.P. Griffin birdied three holes on the back nine of Round 1 to finish with a 1-under 71, the 'Canes low score over the opening 18 holes. All-PBC First Team selection Craig Gibson tied for the low round of the tournament with a blistering 67 in the second round in which he rattled off six birdies to go with only one bogey. Gibson is 2-under overall, tied for third, two strokes behind the individual leader Joel Dahlenburg from Flagler.
Travis Oestmann was second for the Hurricanes with a 4-over 148 and is tied for 14th overall in the 55-player field. Griffin and Nate Gahman are at 5-over and Chris Hall sits at 8-over with a 152.
Play concludes with a final round Tuesday morning.
