Men fall in 2OT; women lose 3-0 at UNCP

UNC Pembroke took a pair of matches from GSW on Saturday afternoon.  The men surrendered a late goal in the second overtime to suffer a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat; and the Lady Hurricanes were defeated 3-0 in the early match.

UNCP 2, GSW men 1 (2OT)

Jamie Kiep converted a one-on-one challenge with UNC Pembroke goalkeeper Horatio Bynes to net the 87th minute equalizer and send the game into overtime, but Eirik Torgerson's 109th minute Golden Goal helped UNCP pull out a 2-1 victory over Georgia Southwestern Saturday afternoon at Varsity Grounds.

Andy Pullin and Torgerson both netted a goal apiece for the hosts, with Chicho Abreu, Dragan Lipovac and Rondell Honora each booking assists. Derek Schicker registered an assist for the visitors. Bynes grabbed a pair of saves for the Braves between the pipes, with Georgia Southwestern netminder David Porley turning in one save in the loss.

Neither team was really able to get an edge in the opening 60 minutes of play, but Abreu's quick pass to Pullin on a momentum transition was redirected underneath a diving Porley for the game's first goal. The score would hold up for more than 50 minutes of play until Schicker found an opening in UNCP's defense on a breakaway opportunity, thereby creating a simple one-on-one opportunity for Kiep to get the Hurricanes off the mark.

UNCP (7-5-1, 3-2-0 PBC) finished with a slim 10-8 shots advantage after recording the only two shots in the extra sessions. The Braves also held a 6-4 corner kicks advantage over GSW (2-10-0, 0-3-0), with the most imporant corner perhaps the last, as it led to the winning score.

The Hurricanes are at North Georgia on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. match. Live stats will be available on gswcanes.com

UNCP 3, GSW women 0

The UNCP women's soccer team was able to hold visiting Georgia Southwestern scoreless and pick up a 3-0 victory over the Lady Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Grounds.

GSW trailed 1-0 at the half.

Junior Faye Corbett assisted newcomer Anna Svensson in UNCP's first pair of goals. The first ball to find the back of the net did so in the 28th minute, while the second score came in the 53rd minute of play. Each goal had the same recipe for success as Corbett serviced the ball into the Lady Canes' box while Svensson delivered one deadly strike to send the ball to the back of the net.

The Lady Braves last goal came off a corner kick delivered by Fanny Forsman in the 72nd minute. Junior Sheena Mature was able to get a touch on the ball to deliver it to freshman Ashley Anctil who redirected it past GSW goalkeeper Amber Bahri.

Bahri made 16 saves - two shy of the single-game school record. Rea Segoviano stopped one for UNCP.

The Lady Braves improve to 8-3-1 overall, 3-2-1 PBC, while Southwestern falls to 3-8-0 overall, 0-5 PBC.

The Lady Hurricanes are at North Georgia for a 1 p.m. match on Wednesday. Live stats will be available on gswcanes.com.
