AMERICUS, Ga. – The Georgia Southwestern men's soccer team's matchup with Montevallo (10-3-4, 5-1-2 PBC) on Saturday was the season finale for the Hurricanes. It was also "Senior Day" for seven of the Hurricanes, which added to the importance of the final match of the season. Unfortunately, GSW was unable to muster up any late season magic as they dropped the match to the Falcons 4-0.
Montevallo took the lead early when senior Phil Jackson buried his fifth goal of the season just eight minutes and three seconds in. That score would be the lone scoring action for the next 35 minutes before the Falcons would tack on their second of the night in the 44th minute. Senior Tyson Eyo would flick a ball to himself and drive along the edge of the box before ending his solo effort with a goal to the far post for the 2-0 halftime lead.
The 'Canes were outshot 8-3 in the first half with Hunter Sams and Shane McKay each registering shots. Cade Jones was able to tally one save in the half.
GSW came out looking to cut into the lead in the early going of the second half. Shane McKay attempted to get the Hurricanes on the board with a pair of shots within minutes of one another. Each were on target, but we denied with diving saves by Montevallo goalkeeper Brendan Ledgeway. Meanwhile, the GSW defense would post over 35 minutes of scoreless action before conceding two Montevallo goals in the final eight minutes of play.
The first of the two goals was scored by Mike Rinzema off a Steven Didik feed. The second came off an Alwyn Adams – Patrick Dougall combination to put the final score at 4-0.
GSW would end the night taking eight shots (three on goal) total. The offense was led by Shane McKay's four shots, and he was supported by KleesBatner Loembet-Makaya, Joshua Manga, Hunter Sams and Ross Sellers who all took one shot. Goalkeeper Cade Jones would finish the night tallying two saves.
The Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes end the season with a 3-11-2 (0-7-1 PBC). Saturday's loss was the final match in a blue and white uniform for Michael Morgan, Dominic Davis, Kevin Huet, Shane McKay, Linley Laverdure, Ethan Vick and Tom Andre. While these seniors were unable to get a victory in their final collegiate game, Georgia Southwestern is proud of them for all of their accomplishments as student-athletes representing the university.
