Newcomers Lead 'Canes To Opening Day Win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - With seven newcomers in the starting lineup for the Georgia Southwestern men's soccer team Thursday evening there was anticipation for the season opener against Faulkner University at John Mark Stallings Field along with and a hint of uncertainty. The new-look Hurricanes took advantage of a late opportunity and Ron Calle - one of the new faces on the roster - scored in the 79th minute to give GSW a 1-0 victory.

Cesar Espinosa slid the pass to a closing Calle for the game-winning goal behind Faulkner goalkeeper Pritchard Ndaira.

The Hurricanes have now started two of their last three seasons with a win. Faulkner drops to 0-2 this fall and has yet to notch a victory against GSW in three meetings.

Newcomers Calle, Isaac Avila and Chad Hoffman collected four shots apiece for GSW.

The Eagles outshot GSW 17-13 although both sides finished with six shots on goal. The Hurricanes led 4-3 in corner kicks.

Joe Cullip saved six in his first appearance for GSW and posted the squad's first clean sheet in almost a year to the day (Sept. 12, 2012). Ndaira stopped five for Faulkner.

Southwestern travels to Florida Tech on Saturday for a 2 p.m. match.
