'Canes Drop Opener In Double Overtime, 2-1

AMERICUS - After scoring the first goal of the match, the Georgia Southwestern men's soccer team surrendered a pair of unanswered scores to Faulkner University, including the deciding goal less than two minutes into the second overtime period, to suffer a 2-1 loss on Thursday afternoon at Hurricane Field.

Isaac Avila put the Hurricanes ahead early when his shot from inside the box found the back of the net off a short pass from Ilya Golubevs at the 21:16 mark.

Brennan Bauschka had an opportunity to put the Hurricanes up by two, but his rocket from the middle of the box was drilled into the hands of Faulkner goalkeeper Pritchard Ndaira.

With 3:45 remaining in the first half the field was cleared for a lightening delay that lasted close to an hour.

Faulkner (3-0-1) seized momentum out of the break and evened the match in the 67th minute with a goal from Costa Whitehead.

DJ Garrett came up inches short of helping the Hurricanes regain the lead when his shot from 20 yards out jarred the right post in the 79th minute.

Despite playing a man down due to a red card in the 84th minute, Faulkner was able to generate the deciding score game at the 101:44 mark off a goal from Gabi Queroiz.

Faulkner finished with a 13-5 advantage in corner kicks while committing six more fouls than GSW (13-7).

Both sides had seven shots on goal.

Garrett Blamire saved five between the pipes for GSW. Ndaira stopped six for Faulkner.

Southwestern travels to Southeastern University on Saturday for a 7 p.m. match.
