'Canes Fly With The Night Hawks

AMERICUS - Georgia Southwestern goals by Cesar Espinoza and Avery Alderman served as the scoring bookends of Wednesday afternoon's match at Hurricane Field with Thomas University as the Night Hawks scored twice in between leading to a 2-2 draw in men's soccer action.

Thomas (4-0-2) entered the match ranked No. 18 in NAIA with wins in their division against No. 1 Martin Methodist, No. 16 Georgia Gwinnett and No. 22 Bethel University over the last 11 days. Southwestern (2-2-1) entered the match 0-7-1 all-time against the Night Hawks.

Espinoza opened the scoring in the 12th minute when he drilled his second goal of the season. Isaac Avila and Ron Calle pushed the ball up the field for the Hurricanes to set up the score.

TU responded quickly as Jack Slocombe evened the match less than a minute later off an assist from Severin Abt.

The Night Hawks grabbed their only lead of the afternoon in the 50th minute when Jonathon McGrath took a deflected pass from Lyle Gifford in the box and punched it into the back of the net to put the visitors up, 2-1.

GSW would not go away. The Hurricanes put the final goal in the books when Alderman converted a header off a Brennan Bauschka service at the 54:42 mark.

Both sides locked down on defense the rest of the way.

TU finished with an 8-2 edge in shots on goal and a 14-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Garrett Blamire stopped six between the pipes for GSW. Night Hawks goalie Alex Condell did not record a save.

Southwestern returns to Peach Belt Conference play Saturday with a trip to Lander University for a 3:30 p.m. match.
