Missed Opportunities And PKs Haunt 'Canes In Loss

AMERICUS – Eric Carrion converted two penalty kicks to lead the North Georgia men's soccer team past Georgia Southwestern, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at Hurricane Field.

GSW falls to 3-6-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the Peach Belt Conference after suffering their fourth-straight loss. North Georgia has won two in a row and improves to 3-7-1 overall and 2-2 in PBC play.

The Hurricanes had the first opportunity to strike in Saturday's contest, but UNG goalkeeper Victor Ohlin guessed right and made a diving save on Avery Alderman's penalty kick in the 14th minute.

With a little wind out of their sails from the missed opportunity, GSW made a costly error in the 28th minute committing a foul inside the top of the box in an attempt to gain advantage on a header. Carrion proceeded to convert the penalty kick and give UNG a 1-0 lead.

Carrion played a role in the next score for the Nighthawks as well when he found Luis Huertas wide open in front of the goal after GSW goalkeeper Garrett Blamire had fallen down outside the goal area in an attempt garner possession of the ball.

UNG led 2-0 at the halftime break.

Carrion punched in his second penalty kick at the 47:21 mark and the final UNG goal came from Manuel Hernandez in the 80th minute off a pass from Matt Shaftoe.

GSW finished with nine shots on goal to match the Nighthawks. Isaac Avila, Ron Calle, Silvio Polly and D.J. Garrett tallied two shots on goal apiece for the Hurricanes.

UNG held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Blamire (2-6-2) saved four in 45 minutes of action before making way for Joshua Swift, who stopped one shot over the final 45 minutes.

Ohlin stopped nine for UNG. The nine saves are the most by an opponent against GSW this season.

Calle, Alderman, Cesar Espinoza, Jason Getreu, Jon-Luke Cannada and Caleb Graves were recognized in a ceremony prior to the match for GSW Senior Day.

Southwestern travels to Montevallo on Wednesday for an 8:30 p.m. match against the Falcons.
