5th-Ranked Mountain Lions Wear Down GSW

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Kendall Carballo scored a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes of the opening half to propel the 5th-ranked Young Harris College men's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Georgia Southwestern on Saturday evening.

GSW falls to 3-8-2 overall and 1-5-1 in the Peach Belt Conference after suffering its sixth-straight loss. Young Harris has won 10 in a row and improves to 10-0-1 overall and 5-0 in PBC play.

Carballo broke up a scoreless match in the 36th minute when he collected a loose ball in the front of the goal and punched it into the back of the net. He struck again less than a minute later off a pass from Ilija Ilic.

YHC took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

The Mountain Lions added some insurance in the 56th minute before Isaac Avila put the Hurricanes on the board with his third goal of the season. Avila capitalized on a YHC turnover and beat the keeper to pull GSW within two scores, 3-1, with just under nine minutes remaining.

The final goal of the match came from Ilic in the 85th minute.

GSW finished with three shots on goal compared to 15 by the Mountain Lions. Avila, Ilja Golubevs, and Brennan Bauschka had one shot on goal apiece for the Hurricanes.

YHC held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Joshua Swift saved 11 in goal for GSW.

Anton Viden stopped two for YHC.

Southwestern returns to Americus for its final home match of the season, a 3:30 p.m. tilt on Wednesday against Clayton State.
