Season Opener Ends In A Draw

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern men's soccer team scored two goals in the opening 24 minutes against Point University on Thursday afternoon but was held scoreless the rest of the way in a 2-2 draw at Hurricane Field.

It was the season opener for GSW. Point's record moved to 1-2-1 overall.

Silvio Polly put the Hurricanes ahead with a quick strike in the fifth minute as Isaac Avila delivered the cross to a sliding Polly who punched in the first score of the season for GSW. Polly scored the final goal of 2014 for the Hurricanes before adding the first of 2015.

The Skyhawks wasted no time answering as Roberto Carizzosa found the back of the net at the 8:57 mark to even the score at 1-1.

The trio of Nick Bottka, Jonathan Sayers and Chris Steinwachs accounted for the final GSW strike of the afternoon in the 24th minute. Quick touches in the box by Bottka and Sayers set up Steinwachs for the goal and gave the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead.

Geovanni Villa Arellano delivered the equalizer in the 64th minute for Point.

Both sides had a chance to punch in the deciding goal with the opponent's keeper out of position but a pair of team saves kept the match deadlocked at 2-2.

Point finished with a slim 8-7 advantage in shots on goal while the Hurricanes won the corner kicks battle, 9-5.

GSW goalkeeper Joshua Swift saved three over the final 65 minutes. Garrett Blamire started between the pipes for Southwestern and saved one in the first half. Ned Avies stopped four for Point.

The Hurricanes travel to Middle Georgia State on Saturday for a 7 p.m. non-conference match with the Knights.
