MORROW, Ga. - The Georgia Southwestern men's soccer team dropped a 5-1 Peach Belt Conference decision at Clayton State on Wednesday evening at Laker Field. 

Southwestern's record drops to 1-9-2 overall, 0-6-1 in the PBC, while Clayton State improved its mark to 8-4-1 and 4-3 in conference play.

Quick strikes from Clayton State's Sekou Thornell put the Hurricanes in an insurmountable early deficit. Thornell scored 14 seconds into the match and added another goal in the eighth minute.

Eamonn Smith headed in a corner kick at the 20:18 mark to put the Lakers ahead 3-0. That score held up until the second half. Avery Shepard notched the first of his two second half goals at the 63:50 mark.

Trailing 4-0, GSW senior defender Jamie Wall recorded his first goal with the Hurricanes when he converted a penalty kick in the 77th minute. 

Shepard tallied the final score of the evening with seconds remaining in the match.

The Lakers finished with 8-2 shots on goal advantage and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.

Starting goalkeeper Garrett Blamire saved one for GSW before turning things over to Joshua Swift for the final 45 minutes. Swift turned away two shots. Viltsu Tuumi stopped one for Clayton State over the opening 63 minutes before Oliver Pannell came on to cover the final 27 minutes. Pannell did not make a save.

The Hurricanes return to action on Saturday when they host Francis Marion at 3:30 p.m. in a Peach Belt match.
