GSW Drops Two at Valdosta State

VALDOSTA - The Georgia Southwestern tennis teams were unable to upset Valdosta State on Monday at the VSU Tennis Complex, but the men gave it a valiant run against the top-ranked program in D-II. 

GSW WOMEN 0, VALDOSTA STATE 9

The Georgia Southwestern women's tennis suffered its first loss of the season, a 9-0 decision to the Lady Blazers on Monday afternoon in non-conference action.

The Lady Hurricanes (2-1) best opportunity for a point came at No. 3 singles where Mollie McGowan lost a third-set tiebreaker to Maja Ehses.

Melinda Vansant won seven games at No. 6 singles.

GSW MEN 2, #1 VALDOSTA STATE 7

The Georgia Southwestern men's tennis team had its best showing against VSU in the program's NCAA era (since 2007). The Hurricanes won two matches against the Division II preseason No. 1.

Joseph Bjerregaard and Yvan Ruelle opened doubles with a victory at No. 1. Valentin Demande and Evgeniy Vinogradov nearly pulled the upset at No. 3 doubles to put GSW ahead 2-1, but fell short in an 8-6 defeat.

Jake Koonce remained undefeated in singles for the Blue & Gold at No. 5 singles with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 win over Santiago Vidales. Ryan Bartz won the first set of his match at No. 4 singles, but could not hold on in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 setback to Sebastian Jasyk. Yvan Ruelle lost in a second-set tiebreak at No. 3 singles and Matt Vansant dropped a three-set decision, 6-4 in the third, to Tammo Haake at No. 6.

GSW is now at .500 for the spring with a 2-2 record.
