GSW Two-A-Days: A Spring Sports Preview

Practice is underway as the GSW Hurricane spring athletic programs start preparations for their upcoming 2013 seasons.

In preparation, GSWAthletics.com begins a weekly Two-A-Day series that will introduce you to two key players in each of our five spring athletic programs every Friday in the month of January.

Get to know the senior leaders of the Georgia Southwestern baseball, softball, men's and women's tennis , golf teams as well as the assistant coaches as they go through the 'Category 7' ringer in addition to hearing their thoughts about their upcoming seasons.

For the final installment, meet men's tennis junior standout Stephen Moore as well as the new softball assistant coach, Jennifer Martinez.

Moore capped off a sophomore campaign that saw him winning five matches on the season good enough for second most on the team.

Next is first-year softball assistant coach Jennifer Martinez.

Martinez, a native of La Habra, California, comes to Americus as a noted collegiate softball pitching standout with the University of Arizona.

Martinez wrapped up her collegiate playing career in 2009 where she went 11-4 with a 2.90 ERA her senior season. She made 38 appearances and tossed five complete games her final year, splitting time as a starter and a reliever for UA. Martinez struck out 100 batters in 103 2/3 innings of work while posting team lows in walks (27) and opponents' batting average (.258).

Martinez picked up wins against a trio of top 15 teams in 2009, including Arizona State (No. 5), California (No. 14) and Stanford (No. 8). The victory over Stanford came in a must-win Game 2 of the Super Regional en route to the Wildcats' appearance in the NCAA Women's College World Series. UA finished the season with a 46-17 record.

In March of 2010 Martinez began a six-month stint overseas playing professionally for Unione Fermana of the Italian Softball League.

Martinez holds a bachelor's degree in English and will pursue her Master of Business Administration degree at GSW.
