GSW Comes Up Short At Middle Georgia

COCHRAN, Ga. - The Georgia Southwestern tennis teams dropped a non-conference doubleheader at Middle Georgia State College on Wednesday afternoon. The men fell to the Knights, 5-4, and the women lost 7-2.

Both GSW programs return to Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday at Flagler College with matches at 2:30 p.m.

GSW MEN 4, MIDDLE GEORGIA 5

Abel Acuna-Moreno picked up a pair of victories for the Hurricanes. The sophomore from Madrid, Spain, partnered with Oliver Marshall to win 8-1 at No. 2 doubles before he rolled past Jordan Clayton at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Acuna-Moreno leads the Hurricanes with seven singles victories this spring.

Steven Blythe picked up two wins for the Hurricanes as well. Blythe joined Jake Koonce for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles before earning a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Nick Peters at No. 3 singles.

The decisive team point came down to No. 6 singles. Jake Hicks from Middle Georgia defeated Justin Ralston, 6-1, 6-2.

The GSW men drop to 3-11 this spring. Middle Georgia improved to 3-9 and avenged a 6-3 loss to the Hurricanes in Americus back on Feb. 11.

GSW WOMEN 2, MIDDLE GEORGIA 7

The Lady Hurricanes earned a team point in doubles and another in singles against Middle Georgia.

Carly Cangelosi and Anna Kate Shaw picked up an 8-5 victory over Shelby Ashley and Tricia Wharton at No. 1 doubles to send GSW into singles play down 2-1.

Middle Georgia won five of six matches in singles play with the lone GSW victory coming at No. 3 where Anneliese Leahy was able to grind out her team-leading seventh victory of the spring, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 over Hannah Greene.

Another tight match came at No. 6 singles where Wharton edged out Ashley Denby from GSW, 7-5, 6-4.

The Lady Hurricanes fell to 4-11 overall while Middle Georgia improved 9-6.
