The Georgia Southwestern softball team split a non-conference
doubleheader with Brewton-Parker College on Tuesday afternoon at
Lady Cane Field.
The Lady Hurricanes' bats were silenced in game one 4-1. However, a
pair of two-run home runs by GSW in the third inning led to a
six-run frame and paved the way for a comfortable 9-1 victory in
the nightcap.
GSW manufactured a run in the first to take an early 1-0 lead in
game one. Amanda Howett laced a two-out single to center to drive
in Emily Oglesby. That would end the scoring for GSW.
Brewton-Parker scored three times in the second and once in the
seventh to get the win. The Lady ‘Canes had some chances to
score early, leaving two on in the first and the bases loaded with
one out in the second. For the game, GSW left nine runners on
base.
Brittany Milstid (9-10) took the loss for the ‘Canes. She
pitched five innings giving up three runs, two earned, while
striking out two. Leah Bennett (9-5) got the complete game win for
the visiting Lady Barons allowing the one earned run on eight hits.
She stuck out three and walked three.
Heather Chambers finished the game 2-for-3 for the Hurricanes.
Ashley Durden had a double.
In game two it was all GSW.
The Lady ‘Canes scored two in the bottom of the first
highlighted by a Jennifer Spradley RBI double.
Brewton-Parker scored their lone run in the third inning. GSW
answered with an offensive barrage in the home half of the third.
10 batters game to the plate producing seven hits and six runs.
Jessi Croft hit her sixth home run of the season on a two-run shot
to right field. Three batters later Ashley Harris belted her first
home run of '08, a two-run blast, to left field. Spradley chipped
in with her second RBI double of the game.
GSW went on to score their final run in the fourth.
Tiffany Milstid (3-4) earned the win going all five innings while
allowing the one run. She scattered four hits and struck out one.
Elizabeth Poythress (7-1) was handed her first defeat of the
season. She was sent packing after 2.2 innings having allowed seven
runs, all earned, on nine hits.
Durden led the GSW offense with a perfect 3-for-3 performance in
the nightcap. Harris finished 2-for-3 with the home run, a run
scored and three RBI.
All four seniors fared well at the plate in their final home game.
Jennifer Spradley ended the night with two doubles, two RBI and she
scored a run. Emily Oglesby went 2-for-3 with a RBI, scored two
runs and stole a base. Jessi Croft had the home run, two RBI,
scored two runs and walked. Kassi Reneau went 1-for-2 with a run
scored.
With the split, GSW improves to 17-23. The Lady Canes hit the road
for the rest of the 2008 campaign. The team travels to Central,
S.C. to take on Southern Wesleyan University in a non-conference
doubleheader on Friday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
