Lady 'Canes roll in sweep of Lynn

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern softball team scored 14 unanswered runs to complete a sweep of Lynn University on Friday afternoon at Lady 'Canes Field. GSW took Game 1 of the doubleheader, 6-1, and finished the day with an 8-0 victory.

The Lady Hurricanes snapped a five-game losing streak and improve to 12-16 overall. Lynn dips to 6-20.

Lynn scored its lone run of the afternoon in the second inning of Game 1 to take an early 1-0 advantage.

Southwestern answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame behind two walks, a single, a Lynn error and a wild pitch. Heather Hodge and Hayley Knight scored. 

GSW only needed one hit to score four runs and put the game out of reach in the sixth. Lynn committed two errors and Nichole Griffin knocked a two-run double to left center to highlight the frame. 

Christie Shankle (1-6) earned her first collegiate victory in the complete-game effort. The freshman scattered six hits, walked three and struck out one.

In the nightcap, GSW scored in four of the five innings played and Katie Mueller tossed a shutout to lead the Lady 'Canes to their 12th win of the spring, an 8-0 win over Lynn.

GSW scored two in the first inning, one in the second, two in the fourth and three more in the fifth to cruise past LU.

Robyn Butler was a perfect 3-for-3 to lead the Lady 'Canes offense. Hodge and Knight added two hits apiece. Hodge drove in four runs. Lyndi Duff scored twice and stole two bases.

Mueller (2-2) held Lynn to two hits and struck out two.

Southwestern travels to St. Augustine, Fla. on Sunday to resume Peach Belt Conference play with a doubleheader against Flagler at 1 p.m.
