Thrasher and McElroy Homered, But Barry Sweeps

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.-The Georgia Southwestern softball team played their second double header Sunday at the Southeast/South Region Crossover at Flagler College. GSW (3-5) played Barry University (8-3) and lost both games at Flagler Field.

GAME 1: GSW 3, Barry University 12

GSW had the first run of the game at the bottom of the second when Lauren Thrasher hit her third home run of the season. Berry was able to hit a home run at the top of the fourth to tie things up. At the bottom of the fourth Haley Goodson stepped up to bat for GSW and singled one to right field, stole second and advanced to third on the throw and scored on a throwing error making the score 2-1.

At the top of the fifth Barry was able to get four runs. Kelly Martinez was walked and advanced to second when Dee Espinosa singled one through the right side. Julie Brito was walked and with bases loaded GSW was able to make two outs from the next two batters. Cheyanne Head singled one through the left side sending Martinez home. Hunter Mars was up next for Barry and sent two home with a single up the middle. Megan Copeland was able to send Head in with a single up the right side. Barry finished the fifth inning with four runs, four hits, one error by GSW and three left on base.

In the sixth Barry had another four runs. Espinosa hit a home run, Fernandez scored after making to third off a walk and made it home off a sacrifice hit from Mars. Copeland hit one to left field and sent home two. Barry finished the sixth inning with four runs, four hits, and one left on base.

Rachel McElroy stepped up to bat for GSW and hit one down the left field line for a home run giving the Lady 'Canes their third run of the game.

Barry scored three more in the seventh to take the win 12-3.

GSW finished the game with five hits, three runs and one error.

Haley Goodson (1-3) took the loss for the Lady 'Canes after pitching 5 1/3 innings, gave up 13 hits, nine runs, walked six and struck out two.

Brittany Childs pitched 1 2/3 innings, gave up three hits, three runs and walked three.

GAME 2: GSW 2, Barry University 11

The second game started off slow with neither team scoring in the two innings. The game heated up at the bottom of the third when Barry scored eight runs. With one out and runners on second and third Martinez singled one to the left side sending Mars home. Martinez stole second and scored after Espinosa doubled after hitting one deep to center field sending two home. Brito hit a double to the left side and sent Espinosa home. Fernandez hit a single to left field and stole second. With two outs Osorio hot a double to the left center and sent two in. Copeland also hit a double and sent two in. Barry ended the third with eight runs, eight hits and one left on base.

GSW tried to pick it up in the fourth. Thrasher hit another home run, her fourth of the season, sending McElroy in and giving GSW their only two runs of the game.

Barry scored one in the fourth after bases were loaded and Pazienza was walked. They scored two more in the fifth after Martinez hit a home run and brought in Gallagher also.

GSW had one hit in the game and two runs.

Savannah Carlise (1-2) took the loss for GSW pitching 2 2/3 innings, gave up eight hits, seven runs and walked one.

Brittany Childs pitched 2/3 of an inning, gave up two hits, two runs, walked two and struck out one.

Goodson pitched one inning, gave up two hits and two runs.

The Lady 'Canes are back on the road Tuesday to play Albany State at 1 and 3 p.m.
