Lady 'Canes Split With Patriots

AMERICUS, Ga. - The Georgia Southwestern softball team is now 18-14 overall and 3-3 in the Peach Belt Conference after splitting with Francis Marion University (19-9, 4-4 PBC) on Saturday at Lady Canes Field.

GAME 1: GSW 3, FMU 1

After a scoreless three innings GSW finally got on the board when Hayley Tierce scored off a sacrifice fly from Bri Lewis.

FMU tied the game in the bottom of the sixth off a solo home run from Chelsea Welty.

Mikela Barlow started off the bottom of the sixth with a double down the right field line and advanced to third off a bunt from Tierce. Joshlyn Martin singled to center field plating Barlow and Tierce scored off a sacrifice bunt from Lewis.

The Lady 'Canes defense held off the Patriots to take a two-run win.

GSW finished with eight hits, three runs, three RBIs and no errors.

Brittany Childs (W, 5-3) pitched seven innings, had four hits, one run, walked one and struck out two.

GAME 2: GSW 1, FMU 2

The Patriots were on the board first scoring one run off a walk in the first. The Lady 'Canes tied it up in the bottom of the first when Ella Hawkins singled, stole second, advanced to third on a single from Barlow and scored on a fielders choice.

FMU took the lead back in the fifth off another solo home run from Wetly for the win.

GSW finished with four hits, one run and one RBI.

Haley Goodson (L, 7-7)  pitched seven innings, had three hits, two runs, walked three and struck out six.

The Lady 'Canes are home on Sunday to play a conference doubleheader against UNC Pembroke starting at 1 p.m.
