Seventh-Inning Comeback Assists GSW In Split With UNC Pembroke

AMERICUS, Ga.- An exhilarating seventh inning comeback for the Georgia Southwestern softball team in Game 2 aided a split with UNC Pembroke on Sunday at Lady Canes Field.

GSW is now 19-15 overall and 4-4 in the Peach Belt Conference while UNC Pembroke moved to 14-11 and 5-3 in the PBC.

GAME 1: GSW 0, UNC 11

The Braves jumped to an early lead by starting off the game with a solo home run. After a walk and a double they scored again off a sacrifice bunt. They brought in two more runs in the second off a double to left center and a single down the left field line.

At the top of the fourth UNC Pembroke scored two more runs. They pushed five more across the plate in the fifth off a two-run single and a three-run homer to take an 11-0 win in five innings.

GSW finished with three hits, no runs, no RBIs and two errors.

Brittany Childs (L, 5-4) pitched 4.2 innings, had 11 hits, 11 runs, walked two and struck out none.

Savannah Carlisle pitched 0.1 innings, had no hits, no runs, walked one and struck out one.

GAME 2: GSW 5, UNC 4

The Braves took the lead in the third off a two-run home run and scored another two-run homer in the fourth.

The Lady 'Canes rallied in the fourth pushing three across the plate and scored in the fifth to tie it up. Mikela Barlow started it off with a single up the middle, advanced to second when Hayley Tierce was intentionally walked, moved to third off a sacrifice bunt from Lacy Striblin and scored off an error by the center fielder.

Tierce scored off a single from Bri Lewis, Allee Denny scored off a double from Haley Warner and Erin Steele tied it up in the fifth.

The Lady 'Canes defense held off UNC Pembroke in the sixth and seventh and only needed one more run to win.

Barlow singled to right field, moved to second when Tierce was intentionally walked again and advanced to third when Denny was hit by a pitch. With bases loaded and one out Lewis was up to bat and was walked to bring Barlow home for the win.

GSW finished with four hits, five runs and five RBIs.

Haley Goodson (W, 8-7)  pitched seven innings, had 12 hits, four runs, walked one and struck out six.

The Lady 'Canes are home on Wednesday to play a conference doubleheader against North Georgia starting at 1 p.m.
