Six Lady 'Canes Hit Doubles In Loss To West Georgia

AMERICUS, Ga.- The Georgia Southwestern softball team recorded six doubles in their doubleheader loss to West Georgia on Wednesday at Lady 'Canes Field.

Allee Denney, Shannon Gibson, Mikela Barlow, Hayley Tierce, Joshlyn Martin and Kaley Sikes all hit doubles between the two games.

GSW is now 17-23 overall while West Georgia moved to 16-17.

GAME 1: GSW 8, WEST GEORGIA 6

West Georgia scored the first run in the third off a single. Barlow singled up the middle to score Ella Hawkins and Tierce singled up the middle scoring Emily Smith to take a 2-1 lead.

With bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth Denney hit a double to deep left field to score Barlow, Tierce and Martin. Gibson hit a double to center field to score Denney and take a 6-1 lead.

West Georgia scored two runs in the sixth and rallied in the seventh to score four runs to take a two-run lead. They held off GSW's offense in the bottom of the seventh to complete the comeback.

Denney went 3-for-4 at the plate and Martin was 2-for-4.

Gibson pitched six innings, faced 30 batters, struck out two, walked two and allowed 10 hits and five runs.

Brittany Childs pitched one inning, faced eight batters, struck out two, walked one and scattered two hits and three runs.

GAME 2: GSW 5, WEST GEORGIA 3

West Georgia struck first again in the second game scoring one run in the first off a double. GSW responded with a double of their own from Martin to score Tierce and tie the game. West Georgia doubled again in the second to score and take a one-run lead.

The game went scoreless through four innings until West Georgia scored three runs in the seventh to extend their lead to four.

Gibson started the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run and Barlow scored off a single from Tierce. Unfortunately West Georgia's defense was able to hold off GSW from getting any more hits and completed the sweep.

Tierce went 3-for-4 at the plate, Gibson was 2-for-3 and Barlow was 2-for-4.

Sikes pitched seven innings, faced 33 batters, walked five and allowed eight hits and five runs.

The Lady 'Canes are home on Saturday for a conference doubleheader against Flagler College starting at 1 p.m. at Lady 'Canes Field.
