The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team fell back under
.500 with a 76-70 loss at UNC Pembroke on Sunday afternoon.
UNCP jumped to a 21-11 advantage over the opening nine and a half
minutes of the game. GSW responded with 12 unanswered points -
Jessica Bivins and Brittany Reynolds combining for 11 points during
the run - to take the lead, 23-21 with six minutes left in the
half. The teams went back-and-forth over the next four minutes. A
Reynolds three-pointer as the halftime horn sounded ended a 7-0
UNCP run, but left the Lady 'Canes trailing 38-33 at the
intermission.
The Lady Hurricanes opened the second half connecting on three of their first 14 shots, yet only trailed by 11 (52-41) with 12:19 remaining in the game.
Southwestern would chisel at the deficit and eventually cut the margin to four (68-64) with just under two minutes to go.
UNCP converted eight consecutive free throw attempts to hold on for the win.
UNC Pembroke (8-8, 2-5) shot 58.7 percent from the floor
(27-for-46) for the game while GSW finished at 36.5 percent
(27-for-74), including 26.9 percent from beyond the arc
(7-for-26).
The Lady Hurricanes outrebounded UNCP (35-33), had 10 more steals
(14-4) and scored eight more points off turnovers (24-16) than the
Lady Braves.
Jessica Bivins came off the bench to lead GSW with 16 points.
Brittany Reynolds added 15. Whitley Wiltz pulled down nine
rebounds.
JaToya Kemp finished with a game-high 20 points for UNC Pembroke on
9-for-13 shooting with nine rebounds. Talena Faison scored 15
points and DeDe Cotten added 11.
GSW (7-8, 2-3) completes a four-game PBC road trip on Wednesday
evening at North Georgia.
