The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team rallied from an 18-point deficit to take a lead in the second half, but could not hold on down the stretch as Brenau defeated the Lady Hurricanes 75-64 at the Storm Dome on Tuesday afternoon.
The visiting Golden Tigers connected on 12 consecutive free throws and 4-of-7 three-point attempts over the final 9:04 to pull away and complete the season sweep by winning both meetings in the home-and-home series.
Southwestern trailed 38-20 with 3:29 to go in the first half. A 12-2 run helped the Lady Hurricanes closed the gap to eight points at the half.
With a 14-3 run to open the second half, GSW grabbed their second lead of the game, 46-43, with 14:32 remaining. The teams went back and forth over the next seven minutes until the Lady Hurricanes surrendered the lead for good with 7:53 to go.
GSW finished the game shooting 36.7 percent from the floor
(22-of-60),
including 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from beyond the arc.
Brenau hit 43.6 percent (24-of-55), including a red-hot 10-of-22 from beyond the arc.
Both teams were outstanding from the charity stripe. GSW was a perfect 15-of-15, while Brenau connected on 17-of-21.
Southwestern won the battle of the boards with a 42-27 rebounding advantage, but committed 11 more turnovers (23-12).
Whitley Wiltz led the Lady Hurricanes with a career-high and game-high 19 points to go with nine rebounds. Brittany Reynolds chipped in 15 points.
Vicki Wilson scored 19 points for Brenau (7-2). Paige Cooper was right behind with 18 points and Ashley Hagans added 15.
GSW (5-5) returns to action on January 4, when they open Peach Belt Conference play at USC Aiken.
