Another heartbreaker for the Lady ‘Canes

The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team dropped a 55-53 decision to Armstrong Atlantic State at the Storm Dome on Thursday evening, marking their second loss in a week by a two-point margin.

GSW jumped out to a 9-4 advantage, capped off by a Kanita Holloway layup at the 14:23 mark. AASU answered with a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the game with 12:24 remaining in the first half. The Lady Hurricanes built the lead back to six points (20-14), but Armstrong Atlantic chipped away and eventually took a one-point lead into the halftime break (25-24).

In a game that saw 11 lead changes, the teams went back-and-forth over the opening 14 minutes of the second half, before a Whitley Wiltz layup gave GSW a six-point lead (48-42) with 6:08 remaining in regulation.

The Lady Pirates would not go away and a 13-3 run gave the visitors a three-point advantage (55-51) with 19 seconds left.

After a GSW timeout, Brittany Reynolds drove to the basket and converted a layup - ending a 5:15 drought where the Lady ‘Canes were without a field goal - to cut the lead in half.

After another quick timeout, Reynolds proceeded to pick-off the long inbounds pass from AASU and draw a foul.

Reynolds missed both free throws - the second intentionally - and Jessica Bivins grabbed the long rebound off her second attempt. Bivins had enough time to square and shoot, but her attempt went long at the buzzer and AASU escaped Americus with the win.

GSW finished the game shooting 33.9 percent from the floor (21-of-62), including 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from beyond the arc, while holding Armstrong Atlantic to 28 percent (14-of-50 FGs) off 12 fewer shots.

AASU outrebounded the Lady Hurricanes (48-35). GSW scored 14 more points in the paint (24-10).

Wiltz led the Lady ‘Canes with 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Bivins added 10 points. Reynolds pulled down a team-high nine boards.

Portia Jones scored a game-high 13 points for Armstrong Atlantic (8-14, 5-9 PBC). Arpine Amirkhanyan chipped in 11 points; while Lindsey Hill grabbed 12 rebounds.

GSW (9-13, 4-8) looks to snap a four-game losing streak on Saturday at the Storm Dome for Homecoming 2010 against Flagler at 5:30 p.m.
