Lady Hurricanes win opener, 74-66

The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team opened the 2010-11 campaign with a 74-66 win at Albany State on Tuesday evening. GSW had five players score in double-digits, led by a game-high 17 points from Kanita Holloway.

Southwestern grabbed the lead, 10-9, with 14:35 remaining in the first half and never trailed the rest of the way. The Lady Hurricanes opened a 19-point advantage midway through the second half before Albany State closed the gap to five with just over a minute left in the contest. 

A Nadirah Gardner three-pointer on the ensuing possession extended GSW's lead to eight and put the game out of reach.

GSW shot 39.4 percent from the floor for the game, slightly ahead of ASU (38.2) and forced five more turnovers (23-18).

Albany State (0-3) won the battle of the boards, 52-33, and second-chance points, 11-1.

Tania Walters added 14 points, seven rebounds and a game-high seven assists for Southwestern. The Lady Hurricanes had one seven-assist performance last season.

Cierra Duhart chipped in 14 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Duhart's six blocked shots is a single-game school record in GSW's NCAA era. Jessica Bivins came off the bench to score 13 points and Terra Branch added 11.

Beniedra Colbert posted a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead ASU.

Southwestern opens the home portion of its schedule on Saturday against Young Harris at 2 p.m.
