Lady 'Canes give gritty performance on Homecoming

AMERICUS - Cierra Duhart posted her sixth double-double of the season to lead the Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team to a 48-44 win over Montevallo in the Storm Dome on Saturday evening.

Despite shooting 24 percent from the floor, GSW gave a determined effort and found a way to return to the .500 mark with an overall record of 10-10.

The two sides went back-and-forth over the opening 20 minutes of the game as the lead changed hands seven times and the largest advantage was held by Montevallo at 7-2, less than four minutes into the game.

GSW took a 22-21 lead into the half.

The Lady Hurricanes managed only three points over the first five minutes of the second half, but kept the deficit manageable, staying within four.

A Jessica Bivins three-pointer with 8:30 to play gave GSW the lead, 36-34, and the Lady Hurricanes would not trail again in the contest.

UM tied things up at 44-44, but Duhart and Bivins accounted for the final four points and helped GSW improve to 4-7 in the Peach Belt.

Montevallo falls to 9-11 overall and 5-7 in the PBC.

Both teams struggled from the floor as UM finished with a 29.1 shooting percentage for the game.

The Lady Hurricanes out-rebounded the Falcons, 47-40, and made the most of their opportunities for second-chance points, holding a 21-5 advantage.

Duhart finished with 18 points, 17 rebounds and three blocks for GSW. Bivins added 16 points.

Carrie Parrott paced Montevallo with 10 points.

Southwestern returns to the road for a Thursday matchup in Savannah against Armstrong Atlantic. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
