Lady 'Canes Drop Season Opener to Barry

PENSACOLA, Fla. - A big night by freshman forward Jasmine McSwain wasn't enough for Georgia Southwestern as the Barry Buccaneers outlasted the Lady 'Canes to earn a 55-49 victory Friday afternoon in the first game of the McDonald Fleming Moorhead Tip-Off Classic on the campus of the University of West Florida.

It didn't take long for the newcomer to make an impact for GSW as her 14 points, on 5-10 shooting, led the Blue & Gold in the first half as Southwestern took a 29-26 advantage heading into the locker room.

A 13-2 second half run by Barry (1-0) proved to be the difference in the game as the Bucs held off the Blue & Gold late to pick up a victory in the first-ever NCAA era meeting between the two schools.

The guard tandem of Jackie Perez (12 points) and Dominique Dixon (10 points) led Barry on the afternoon. Tylar Harding proved valuable coming off the bench for the Bucs as she produced a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.

McSwain led the Lady 'Canes on the afternoon, finishing with 20 points. Senior forward Briana Walker led GSW on the glass with nine boards. Junior guard Stormey Smith had a nice first outing as a Lady 'Cane. The guard, a transfer from Daytona State College, assumed the point guard duties for Southwestern and finished with a solid line of 10 points and a team-high four assists to an impressive zero turnovers in 30 minutes of action.

The Hurricanes return to the hardwood Saturday, to take on the University of Southern Indiana at 1 p.m. in the second and final game of the Tip-Off Classic. You can follow the live stats here.
