PEMBROKE, N.C. - The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team played UNC Pembroke close but a late Lady Brave basket proved to be the difference as UNCP came out on top, 64-61, Sunday afternoon.

GSW held a six point advantage, 57-51, with less than five minutes remaining but a 6-0 Lady Brave run evened up the contest setting up the late game heroics.

Two Shaniece Sheffield free throws put the Lady 'Canes up by a point with 32 seconds remaining but UNCP's junior guard Wayne Mack took a pass from Chandrika Fuller and converted a layup to put the Lady Braves back up by one.

Mack's shot proved to be the game winner as GSW's last chance came up short.

Sheffield's shot with eight seconds remaining rolled out and UNC Pembroke held on for a thrilling 64-61 victory.

Southwestern Sophomore guard Kayla Dayton, a recent transfer playing in just her fourth game for the Lady Hurricanes, had a coming out party of sorts.

Dayton finished as the game's leading scorer with career-high 16 points. The 5-foot-10 guard also added five rebounds for GSW (3-10, 1-5 PBC).

Jasmine McSwain (13 points) and Sheffield (12 points) rounded out the Southwestern players who finished in double figures on the afternoon.

Mack led UNCP (8-7, 2-4 PBC) with 13 points, including the ultimate game-winning basket.

Junior forward Jasmine Kemp finished with a double double (10 points, 10 rebounds) for the Lady Braves.

GSW will be back in action this Wednesday as they return to the Storm Dome for a 5:30 p.m. contest against Montevallo.
