Lady 'Canes Falter in Overtime

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern Lady Hurricanes came up just short once again Wednesday evening as the Montevallo Falcons used a strong overtime effort to narrowly prevail, 92-83, in the Storm Dome.

In an intense back and forth affair, a Shaniece Sheffield free throw gave Georgia Southwestern a 75-72 advantage with two minutes remaining in the second half.

The Falcons went on a 6-0 to regain a three point advantage with a minute remaining but a three pointer from Southwestern guard Kayla Dayton tied up the score at 78.

Jasmine McSwain made one of two free throws to put the Lady 'Canes up a point with less than 15 seconds remaining but an offensive rebound off a missed Falcon layup sent Montevallo's Shay Bonner to the line with three seconds remaining.

Bonner made the first but missed the second, potentially game winning, free throw sending the game into overtime.

The Falcons took over the extra session as Montevallo outscored GSW 13-4 so secure the victory.

Kayla Dayton continued her strong play for GSW as she finished with a career-high 20 points for the Lady Hurricanes as they fell to 3-11, 1-6 in the PBC.

The transfer guard was one of five Lady 'Canes who finished in double figure scoring.

Forward Jasmine McSwain finished with 16 points, 13 in the second half, and eight rebounds.

Sheffield finished with 12 points while Danisha Green and Briana Walker notched 10 points a piece for the Blue & Gold.

Montevallo guard Tayler Beverly finished with a double-double on the night with a game-best 26 points and 11 rebounds for the Falcons who improved to 10-6, 5-2 in the PBC.

Georgia Southwestern returns to the hardwood Saturday as they travel to Flagler for a 1:30 p.m. contest.
