VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team lost to Valdosta State 71-50 in Valdosta's Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The host Blazers led 27-21 at halftime. GSW got off to a quick start with a six-point lead in the first half. The Blazers turned things around and started scoring just short of five minutes in.

After the 20 minutes of play, GSW shot 32.1 percent from the field (9 of 28) and 1 of 11 from 3-point range. Valdosta State shot 34.6 percent (9 of 26) and 2 of 8 from the 3-point range. The Blazers outrebouned the Lady Hurricanes 25 to 14. GSW sent Valdosta to the free throw line nine times where the Blazers had a 77 percent success rate. Southwestern went into the half with seven team fouls compared to the Blazers four. 

At the start of the second period Valdosta State came out on fire with a pair of 3-point baskets. The Blazers shot 58.1 percent (18 of 31) from the floor in the second half and connected on 4 of 8 from beyond the arc. GSW trailed with 37.8 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes (14 of 37) with no three pointers to add. The Blazers connected on all four of their attempts from the free throw line. VSU recorded 10 fouls compared to GSW with six.

Junior Shanedra Lockett was the leading scorer for the Lady Hurricanes with 20 points. Lockett was also able to add four rebounds, two assists and one block. Junior Shatoria Hudson was the next top scorer with 12 points, eight rebounds, and one assist for Southwestern.

VSU improves its record to 3-0, while the Lady Hurricanes suffer their first lost of the 2013-14 season and fall to 2-1.

Southwestern travels to Paine College on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. non-conference matchup.
