Junior Duo Unable To Lead Lady 'Canes Past Patriots

AMERICUS – Junior Shanedra Lockett scored a game-high 26 points and junior Shatoria Hudson added 21 to lead Georgia Southwestern in an unrewarded finish on Sunday afternoon in the Storm Dome as Peach Belt Conference opponent Francis Marion University defeated the Lady Hurricanes, 80-75.

Francis Marion came out shooting hot. In the first two minutes, Cy'erra Mills made the first eight baskets of the game. The Lady Hurricanes were set up to trail for the half. Hudson evened up the score at 11:29 after a three-pointer and a jump shot. Later in the half, FMU went on a 9-2 run only being interrupted by a lay-up and free throw by Lockett. The Patriots led the Lady Hurricanes at the half 37-29.

The beginning of the second half brought on even scoring on each side. At 17:45, the Patriots reached their largest lead over the Lady Hurricanes by 12 points. By 15:58, Lockett made a layup to start 14-3 run on FMU.  Bringing the score to FMU 48-47, GSW was unable to secure the lead but kept the rally going. With 0:30 seconds left on the clock, Lockett made two free throws bring the score FMU 76-75. With last minute attempt to even the score between unfortunate turnovers, fouls, and a missed three-pointer the Lady 'Canes lost 80-75.  

Lockett was the high scorer for the game with 26 points. Lockett also added four rebounds, two assists, and five steals. Hudson was the next highest scorer contributing 21 points and two rebounds. Danisha Green contributed seven points and rebounds, six assists, and a steal. Jasmine McSwain also contributed 11 points, six rebounds, one assist, and three steals.

Mills was the highest scorer for FMU with 18 points, three rebounds, and one assist.

The Patriots came out shooting 50% (27-for-54) compared to the Lady 'Canes 46.3% (25-for-54) from the field. GSW bench scored 36 compared to FMU's 23 points.

The Lady Hurricanes fall to 6-6 overall and 1-4 in the Peach Belt and the Patriots improve to 9-3, 4-2 PBC.

Southwestern is on the road Wednesday for a 6:30 p.m. matchup with the University of Montevallo.
