Lady Cougars Claw Past GSW

AMERICUS – Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team competed from tip off to final buzzer with Peach Belt opponent Columbus State. The Lady Cougars finished the game victorious with 75-62.

Junior Tiara Thompson led the charge for GSW with a game high of 24 points, and three rebounds. Shanedra Lockett was the next Lady 'Cane with high numbers, 19 points and five rebounds.

The final of this game was determined by Columbus States ability to get the second chance point. CSU Carrie Washington finished the game with 23 points and 27 rebounds. 14 of 27 rebounds were offensive rebounds where she was able to get the next point.

CSU got away early in the first half; however, after a series of layups by Lockett and Thompson the Lady 'Canes achieved their largest lead of the night of two baskets. The Lady 'Canes were always within a three point range from CSU. From 5:52-4:15, Thompson, Danisha Green, and Sierra Barrino-Kennedy made layups to get back in the lead. This was short lived as the next couple of points were from CSU. The half finished Columbus State leading 33-28.

The Lady 'Canes came out of half time hot with 9-5 lead on CSU between Shaniece Sheffield and Thompson, GSW was within one point of CSU. Thompson and Green were in sync tonight as Green had eight assists for the night; many of them were after feeding the ball to Thompson. The Lady 'Canes came within a seven point game with just two minutes to go. Lockett made two layups to hold GSW there. However CSU was able to make four more points at the end to take it out of reach for GSW. CSU finished 75-62. The largest lead held by CSU was at the end with a 13 point difference.

The Lady 'Canes move on to a 7-10, 2-8 PBC record. Columbus State improves to a 12-4, 7-3 PBC record. The overall school record between GSW and CSU has CSU in the lead 14-1.

The Lady 'Canes are traveling to PBC opponent Lander on Wednesday, January 29th. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
