Lockett & Dunkley Get Double-Doubles In Win Over Georgia College

AMERICUS, Ga.- The Georgia Southwestern women's Basketball team, now 9-2 and 3-1 in the Peach Belt Conference, remained undefeated in the Storm Dome after beating the Georgia College Bobcats (5-6, PBC 1-3) 74-69 Monday night in the Storm Dome. Seniors Shanedra Lockett and junior Yvonna Dunkley had double-doubles to contribute to GSW's win.

Dunkley lead the Lady 'Canes with 22 points and 10 rebounds and Lockett scored 15 points and had a game high of 13 rebounds. Lockett started the game with layup and a 3-pointer to give GSW the lead early on. Emili Russ had a jump shot followed by a 3-pointer by Kenyona Armstrong and another 3-pointer from Tiara Thompson to give GSW a 6 point lead three minutes in.

In four minutes Dunkley put in two lay ups and her first two 3-pointers to give the Lady 'Canes an eleven point lead half way through the first. With seven minutes left Lockett and Thompson both made lay up's, Dunkley put in her third 3-pointer and Russ made a lay up to give the Lady 'Canes a fourteen point edge against the Bobcats. In the last five minutes of the first half GSW scored ten more points, including Dunkley with her fourth 3-pointer, to end the period with a seventeen point lead 43-26.

The Bobcats came into the second half with a more competitive attitude and made the first two baskets. GSW answered with a jump shot from Russ and two made free throws from Armstrong to make the score 47-29 three minutes in. Georgia College retaliated and made the next four baskets including a 3-pointer to close the gap to eleven points at the 11:29 mark. By the 7:02 mark the Bobcats were only trailing by three points and with six minutes left they tied the game 56-56 with a layup.

The Lady 'Canes found a second burst and took back the lead by twelve points starting with two made free throws, a lay up and another free throw from Lockett; followed by a lay up from Shatoria Hudson and two made free throws from Ja'Quasha Sesler, then another made free throw and lay up from Hudson.

The Bobcats kept up their fight and came back with four lay ups and a jump shot to only trail by four with thirty-two seconds left. Thompson and Lockett both made two free throws apiece to put GSW back at an eight point lead. With the clock counting down the last few seconds the Bobcats gave it one last attempt and made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to only lose by five.

GSW out rebounded Georgia College 49-38 and had a 77.3% rate with free throws compared to Georgia College's 52.9%. 

The Lady 'Canes are home in the Storm Dome this Wednesday January 5  to take on Columbus State at 5:30p.m.
