Jackson Career Night & Hudson Gets Double-Double In Loss

AMERICUS, Ga.- Senior Shatoria Hudson had a double double for the Georgia Southwestern State University women's basketball team at home in the Storm Dome Monday night against Armstrong State. The Lady 'Canes (9-7, 3-6 PBC) were unable to overcome the Pirates (9-7, 7-2 PBC) and lost, 83-68.

Hudson was the star for the Lady 'Canes with 18 points and a career high of 13 rebounds. Keishundra Jackson scored a career high of 16 points for GSW and Yvonna Dunkley put up 11 points and had 7 rebounds. Hudson made two of the first three baskets for GSW the other made by Ja'Quasha Sesler giving the Lady 'Canes a 6-0 lead. Brigitta Barta put in her first two points, out of thirty-three, on the board for Armstrong but Tiara Thompson put in a 3-pointer to give GSW a seven point lead. Thirty seconds later Armstrong put in their own 3-pointer and a lay up after a steal to only trail by two and after a foul on GSW they tied the game with two made free throws.

Thompson put in two free throws of her own to take the lead back by two but Barta put in two more lay ups followed by her teammate putting in another to take the lead 17-11. Sesler made a lay up to close the gap but Armstrong was able to put in a 3-pointer followed by two free throws by Barta. Hudson put in another lay up for GSW along with Khabriyah Brown making a free throw but Armstrong responded with a 3-pointer and two lay ups to make the score 29-16 with 5:46 left in the first half.

Keishundra Jackson put in a lay up and made a free throw to give GSW three points and only trailed by ten but the Pirates put up a 3-pointer to keep the lead at a stretch. Hudson put in another lay up and Dunkley made a 3-pointer and two free throws but Barta put up a lay up for the Pirates to keep a ten point lead with two minutes left. Brown and Armstrong both put in lay ups for GSW but the Pirates were able to make two lay ups and a free throw to capture the lead going into the second 41-30.

Hudson started the second half with two baskets for GSW but Armstrong made the next five baskets, including two from Barta, to take a fifteen point lead. Barta put in another three baskets to push the gap to nineteen for Armstrong. Hudson and Dunkley put in lay ups for GSW followed by Jackson with a lay up, a free throw and a jump shot to trail behind Armstrong by only twelve.

Armstrong put in four more lay ups, three by Barta, to take a seventeen point lead with 8:38 left in the second half. Sesler made two free throws followed by a lay up along with a lay up from Dunkley to try and close the gap to eleven with seven minutes left. After Armstrong made a lay up Hudson put one in followed by Dunkley with a free throw followed by Armstrong with a 3-pointer to make the score 68-55 with 5:30 left on the clock.

In the last five minutes Jackson made a jump shot, two lay ups and two free throws for GSW. Brown put in a lay up and Thompson made a 3-pointer. Barta put in four free throws and two lay ups. Armstrong had two more 3-pointers and another free throw to win the game 83-68.

The Pirates out rebounded the Lady 'Canes 39-35 but GSW's bench points beat out Armstrong's 23-3.

The Lady 'Canes are back at home in the Storm Dome Saturday January 24 to face off against UNC Pembroke at 1:30 p.m.
