Dunkley Scores Season High 22 Points In 81-71 Loss Against Augusta

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team lost its first Peach Belt Conference game Thursday night against Augusta University in the Storm Dome.

GSW is now 6-2 overall and 0-1 in the PBC while Augusta is 7-2 and 1-0 in the PBC.

Khayla Owens made the first basket of the game to give GSW a two point lead that got cut short with two layups, a free throw and a jump shot from Augusta to give them a five point advantage.

The Lady 'Canes kept it close staying behind by three for most of the first quarter. Yvonna Dunkley brought it within two with a 3-pointer but  the Jags put in a layup and 3-pointer to take a seven point advantage and finished the first quarter up 21-14.

GSW out scored Augusta in the second quarter 14-13 but were still behind at halftime 34-28.

Augusta put up two baskets to take a 10 point lead in the third quarter and took a 15 point lead with 4:55 to go in the third.

Va'Queshia Hall put in a free throw that started a streak for the Lady 'Canes. After Hall, Dunkley made a layup followed by a jump shot from Hall to come within ten of Augusta.

Augusta made a layup and a free throw but McSwain sunk a 3-pointer followed by Dunkley with jump shot, McSwain with another 3-pointer and Ja'Quasha Sesler with two made free throws to trail by three.

Augusta made a 3-pointer and GSW came back with two made free throws from Emili Russ to trail 55-51 going into the fourth.

Augusta went on a streak starting with two 3-pointers, followed by a layup, two free throws and another 3-pointer to take a 17 point lead with 7:31 left in the game.

Dunkley made three more 3-pointers in the fourth to try and help the Lady 'Canes close the gap but Augusta out scored them by six in the last quarter to take a 81-71 win.

Dunkley led GSW with 22 points and seven rebounds. McSwain had 19 points and both Russ and Holden picked up five rebounds a piece.

The Lady 'Canes are back in the Storm Dome on Saturday to host Lander University at 1:30 p.m.
