Montevallo Moves Past Lady 'Canes For The Win

AMERICUS, Ga.- The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team fell to 9-11 overall and 3-10 in the Peach Belt Conference after losing, 68-60, to the University of Montevallo (7-13, 4-9 PBC) Wednesday night in the Storm Dome.

Montevallo took a six point lead in the opening 90 seconds of the game and were up by 13 with 3:11 left in the first quarter. Kris Beckham put in a 3-pointer and a jump shot and Aleah Holden made a free throw to bring GSW within eight points of the lead. Montevallo finished the first quarter with a layup to lead by nine.

The Lady 'Canes heated up in the second quarter going on a six point streak to come within three points. Whitney Young made a jump shot followed by Yvonna Dunkley with a layup and Khayla Owens with two free throws.

The Falcons took out their talons and finished the second quarter with a jump shot, 3-pointer and a layup to lead 34-24 at halftime.

The third quarter was basket for basket. Each team recorded 11 points and Montevallo kept a ten point advantage heading into the final quarter.

The Lady 'Canes had their highest scoring quarter in the fourth and out-scored Montevallo 25-23 but couldn't make up for the low points in the previous quarters. GSW was within seven points after Chanice Whitton and Dunkley made back to back layups and cut the advantage to six after a free throw from Holden and another layup from Whitton.

The Falcons went on a seven point streak with two layups and a 3-pointer to take a 13 point lead with 3:26 remaining.

Owens put in a layup and a free throw followed by Dunkley with a 3-pointer to come within seven again and came within four points with another 3-pointer from Dunkley with 26 seconds left.

Unfortunatly GSW fouled three times and Montevallo made four free throws to take a 68-60 win.

Dunkley led GSW with 14 points and Holden led with 16 rebounds.

The Lady 'Canes are on the road Saturday to play Clayton State at 1:30 p.m.
