No. 24 Lakers Swim Past Lady 'Canes

MORROW, Ga.- The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team drop to 9-12 overall and 3-11 in the Peach Belt Conference after a 68-47 loss to No. 24 Clayton State (17-4, 11-3 PBC) Saturday afternoon in The Loch.

GSW had just given Clayton State their first PBC loss 71-59 at home a few weeks ago and today Clayton State came back with a vengeance.

The Lakers jumped to an early lead, 15-5, after an eight point streak five minutes into the game. The Lady 'Canes went on a six point bender to come within four points but Clayton State finished the first quarter with a layup to lead 17-11.

Jasmine McSwain started the second quarter off with a 3-pointer to put GSW within three points but the Lakers put in two more baskets to keep their advantage at seven and extended it to 13 points with 1:31 remaining in the half and went into halftime leading 35-22.

The Lakers kept up their momentum and went on a six point bender to lead by 19 five minutes into the second half. Yvonna Dunkley put in a layup and Clayton State responded with a nine point streak to take a 26 point advantage with 3:34 remaining in the third.

Kenyona Armstrong and Va'Queshia Hall scored a combined seven points for GSW in the last few minutes of the third to head into the final quarter behind 57-33.

Dunkley put in a 3-pointer thirty seconds into the fourth quarter and McSwain followed with a free throw. The Lady 'Canes had their highest scoring quarter in the fourth and out-scored Clayton State 14-11 but their low numbers in the first half put them at a disadvantage and they lost 68-47.

Dunkley led GSW with 13 points, Hall recorded 10 points and McSwain had 10. Aleah Holden  led in rebounds with 8.

The Lady 'Canes are on the road Wednesday to play North Georgia at 5:30 p.m.
