Dunkley And Hall With 16 Points A Piece In Win Over North Georgia

DAHLONEGA, GA- Yvonna Dunkley and Va'Queshia Hall led the Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team with 16 points a piece Wednesday night in their win against North Georgia 72-63 in Memorial Hall.

The Lady 'Canes move to 10-12 overall and 4-11 in the Peach Belt Conference while North Georgia becomes 15-9 and 7-8 in the PBC.

The first five minutes of the game was a back and forth affair until Aleah Holden put in a layup followed by Dunkley with two free throws to give the Lady 'Canes a five point cushion and then extended their lead to nine with a six point run. Hall put in a layup followed by a jumper from Kenyona Armstrong and Hall had another layup.

Hall stretched GSW's lead to ten with a layup with 2:21 remaining and Holden made it 12 with 1:10 left.

The Nighthawks went on a six point bender to cut GSW's lead to seven by the end of the first quarter.

North Georgia came within four points of the lead 90 seconds into the second half. Ja'Quasha Sesler and Hall put in consecutive baskets to give GSW an eight point buffer and the Nighthawks cut it down to four points again with 3:16 remaining. Sesler put in the last basket of the quarter to give GSW a 34-28 lead at halftime.

The third quarter remained close until the seven minutes in when Hall put in a jump shot followed by a 3-pointer from Dunkley to take a ten point lead. North Georgia responded with two free throws, a 3-pointer and another free throw to come within four.

Khayla Owens made two free throws and the Nighthawks put in another three. Emili Russ made back to back baskets and North Georgia finished the third quarter with two free throws to trail by five.

North Georgia tied the game 58-58 three minutes into the fourth quarter and GSW went on a five point streak to take the lead again. The Nighthawks came within three and Dunkley put in a basket to give the Lady 'Canes a five point margin. North Georgia came back with a jump shot and Whitney Young put in a three pointer for a six point lead with 1:17 left.

In the last minute the Lady 'Canes made four free throws to win 72-63.

Sesler recoded 11 points and Owens led in rebounds with 12.

GSW out-rebounded North Georgia 39-37.

The Lady 'Canes are home on Saturday to host Francis Marion University at 1:30 p.m. in the Storm Dome.

Saturday is Pink Day for Breast Cancer Awareness and all proceeds will go to the Play 4Kay Fund.
