Braves Too Much For Lady Canes On The Road

PEMBROKE, N.C. -- Scoring points was tough to come by for the Georgia Southwestern State University women's basketball team in a 71-60 loss at UNC Pembroke Tuesday afternoon at Lumbee Bank Court.

Shanya Jones led GSW with 12 points and six assists and three blocks, while Kya Cochran scored 10 points to go along with four rebounds. The loss drops the Lady Canes to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the Peach Belt Conference heading into the holiday break.

How It Happened: The Braves opened the game on a 10-2 run and scored the first three baskets of the game before Tamecia Blue knocked down two free throws to get GSW on the scoreboard. The Lady Canes went on a 14-5 run of their own until the 1:31 mark of the first quarter featuring back-to-back 3-pointers from Gabby Figgers and Kya Cochran. UNCP scored four straight to end the first and take a 19-16 lead.

UNCP started the second quarter with another run, this time 10-0 to build a 13 point lead for the Braves. Mariya Trimble ended the run with a layup at the 5:23 mark of the quarter, but UNCP would take a nine point lead into the locker room at the half.

The Braves built their biggest lead of the game at 16 points during the third, holding the Lady Canes to nine points for the quarter. Kya Cochran knocked down a 3-pointer and GSW got layups from Mariya Trimble, Shanya Jones and Adrianne Brown.

GSW was able to put a couple runs together in the fourth, eventually getting the UNC Pembroke lead down to seven points with less than a minute to play, but the Braves knocked down their free throws in the closing moments to seal the win.

Typically a strong 3-point shooting team, GSW managed to go just 7-of-24 from deep during the game. UNCP held a 53-35 advantage in rebounds on the afternoon.

Who Stood Out: Mariya Trimble and Tyisha Moore have been scoring points and collecting rebounds at high rate early in the year for the Lady Canes and that trend continued Tuesday. Trimble recorded six points and grabbed seven rebounds while Moore scored seven points and brought in six boards.

Up Next: The Lady Canes return home after the holiday break for a 1:30 p.m. tip with Lander at the Storm Dome on December 30.
