Lady Canes Seniors Leave Storm Dome In Style

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern State University women's basketball team sent their three seniors out in style with a 74-65 win over Augusta on Homecoming Saturday in their final game at the Storm Dome.

Mariya Trimble scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Lady Canes to the victory, her sixth straight game scoring in double-figures and fourth double-double of the season.

GSW improved to 8-16 overall and 5-15 in Peach Belt Conference play in the final home game for Gabby Figgers, Brittany Grant and Shanya Jones. Augusta dropped to 4-20 and 2-18 in the PBC.

How It Happened: The first quarter was back and forth with three lead changes and neither team leading by more than three as the Jaguars took a one-point lead after the first 10 minutes. GSW shot 37.5 percent from the floor and went 2-of-6 from deep with seniors Gabby Figgers and Brittany Grant each knocking down a trey.

GSW opened it up in the second, outscoring Augusta 17-9 as the Jaguars shot just 3-of-13 (23.1 percent) in the frame. Mariya Trimble scored nine of her 23 points and made all four shots she took to help the Lady Canes take a 33-26 advantage into the locker room.

Both teams struggled to hit open shots in the third quarter. GSW could manage just 19 percent shooting on the way to scoring 11 points while Augusta shot 38 percent, but was only able to score 10. The Lady Canes grabbed 15 rebounds and forced the Jaguars into seven turnovers as they took an eight-point lead to the final 10 minutes.

Tyra Smith came off the bench and gave GSW energy in the fourth, making back-to-back layups to make it a double-digit lead and get the Storm Dome crowd into the game. After a missed layup at the other end Brittany Grant knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Lady Canes a 15-point advantage and ultimately put the game out of reach. GSW extended the lead to 18 before Augusta cut it to nine in the final minute but it was too late.

The Lady Canes outrebounded the Jaguars 55-44 and scored 15 points off 16 Augusta turnovers.

Who Stood Out: Trimble's late-season surge continued with her best performance of the year. Her 24 points and sixth straight game in double-figures were both GSW season-highs. Trimble is the only Lady Cane averaging more than 10 points a game this season.

Up Next: GSW hits the road for the final road trip of the season, beginning with a 5:30 p.m. tip Wednesday night at Clayton State.
