Short-Handed Lady Canes Handle Business

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team got their ninth win of the season Thursday afternoon defeating the Thomas University (Ga.) Night Hawks. The Lady Canes came into the game short-handed with only six players available to play due to injuries/Covid-19. The game was the first game back from the holiday break and the last game of 2021 for the Lady Canes.

The first half was a low-scoring contest with Ava Jones leading the team to their halftime 17 point lead. Ava Jones had 11 of the 19 points scored by GSW in the first quarter and added eight points to her total in the second. Daelyn Craig led the team defensively in the first half having three steals in the first quarter and finishing the half with four total.

The second half was all Lady Canes scoring 31 points in the third quarter, their second-most points in a single quarter this season. The third quarter scoring was led by Jacquelyn Levay who had 10 points on four made baskets. The third quarter was more of the same with Jacquelyn Levay leading the Lady Canes once again in the quarter and GSW finishing strong with a 28 point fourth quarter.

The Lady Canes finish with their third 50+ point win of the season and move to 9-1. Five of the six players available for GSW finished in double figures with the sixth finishing with nine. Ava Jones finished with a team-high 28 points, her season-high, with seven rebounds and five rebounds. Jacquelyn Levay finished second on the team in points with 24 points with six made threes. Kayla Grant finished with a double-double the first of her career.

The Lady Canes will pick back up in 2022 against UNG on the road, Wednesday, January 5th.
