Behind a two-goal performance by junior forward Lauren Burns, the University of Alabama-Huntsville women's soccer team topped GSW 5-0 on Sunday afternoon in the Peach Belt/Gulf South Conference Invitiational in Columbus.
Burns drew first blood for the Lady Chargers at 30:01 with her
first of the season from fellow junior Devin
Newman. Burns then made it a 2-0 UAH lead just before
the end of the half in the 41st minute with an assist from
sophomore midfielder Judy Boatman.
The scoring settled down from that point on until the 71st minute
when the Hurricanes put the ball in their own net and that opened
the flood gates as the Lady Chargers went on to put two more on the
scoreboard in less than five minutes time. Freshman forward
Courtney Mayers made it a 4-0 contest with her third tally of the
season from fellow newcomer Sherra Stansberry in the 74th minute
before junior midfielder Janelle Nedd rounded out the scoring
with her second strike of the season just over two minutes later at
75:28.
Rookie netminder Rachel Marsicano notched her first career shutout
with a three-save performance as the Lady Chargers held an 11-3
shots-on-goal advantage in the contest. Freshman Brittney
Hill led the Lady Hurricanes with four shots, one on
goal. GSW goalkeeper Christy Drabek recorded 11
saves.
