Best seats in the house

The season's biggest and most comfortable crowd watched Clayton State University take a pair of Peach Belt Conference matches from GSW on Wednesday afternoon at Hurricane Field. The Lady Hurricanes were defeated 2-1 as Clayton State converted two headers for goals; and the men fell 3-0 in the second match during the second annual "Couch Potato Challenge" promotion.

Clayton State (4-9-1, 3-5-1 PBC) scored off a header in each half en route to a 2-1 victory over the Lady Hurricanes on Wednesday afternoon at Hurricane Field.

The Lakers' Jennifer Dreasler scored the only goal of the first stanza, converting a header at the 27:50 mark off a cross from Rebekah Cook.

Clayton State extended the lead to two goals in the 70th minute when Cherie Sayon's header squeezed past GSW goalkeeper Amber Bahri. Natalia Valentine earned the assist with her cross to Sayon.

GSW pulled within a goal in the 83rd minute when Brittney Hill notched her team-leading sixth goal of the season off a feed from Jennifer Starvetsky.

Neither team was able to get many good looks at the goal as Clayton State finished with a marginal 4-2 shots on goal advantage. While the Lakers held a 13-0 corner kick advantage, GSW defended well in the box.  Bahri saved two for the Lady Hurricanes.  Dominique Trappio made one stop for Clayton State. 

The Lady Hurricanes (3-11, 0-8 PBC) travel to USC Aiken (5-10, 1-7 PBC) on Saturday looking to end a nine-match losing streak and collect their first conference win of the season.

Clayton State 3, GSW men 0

The Clayton State men's soccer team (10-4-1, 5-1-1 PBC) scored a pair of second half goals to pull away from GSW in Wednesday's second match.

The Lakers and Hurricanes played a scoreless opening 37 minutes, but Jonathan Ray broke the tie for Clayton State at the 37:50 mark when he knocked in a pass from Kyle Timm in front of the goal.

A converted penalty kick in the 51st minute by Matthias Faublas gave the Lakers a 2-0 lead.

Alargie Jobe scored 18 minutes later for Clayton State as he took a pass from Timm at the top of the penalty box and pushed a shot past a GSW's charging goalkeeper David Porley for the final score of the contest.

Clayton State finished with a 9-1 shots on goal advantage, while both sides ended with three corner kicks. Porley saved six for the Hurricanes. David Cristofoli made one save for Clayton State.

 

The Hurricanes (2-13, 0-6 PBC) travel to USC Aiken (4-10-1, 1-6 PBC) on Saturday looking to end a four-match losing skid and collect their first conference win of the season.
