Lady Hurricanes win on day of "firsts"

The Georgia Southwestern women's soccer team gave new coach Tony Economopoulos his first NCAA head coaching victory with a 3-0 season-opening win over Florida College at Hurricane Field on Friday afternoon.

Freshman Jennifer Starvetsky scored her first collegiate goal in the 18th minute off a header from fellow freshman Ally Canganelli to give the Lady ‘Canes a 1-0 advantage.

The lead would remain one goal until early in the second half when junior Stephanie Patrylo knocked a shot past Florida College goalkeeper Maggie Day at the 56:04 mark.

Three minutes later, GSW completed the scoring when freshman Geavonni Bryant punched her first collegiate goal off a slide from 10 yards out.  Patrylo recorded the assist.

Southwestern freshman Amber Bahri notched her first win and shutout between the pipes.  Bahri saved five shots in her debut.  Day saved four for Florida College.

GSW outshot the Lady Falcons 13-6.

The Lady Hurricanes are back in action on Sunday (8/30), hosting Converse College at 2 p.m.
