GSW soccer teams suffer tough losses

A single goal was the difference in each of the Georgia Southwestern soccer matches on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Hurricanes were defeated 2-1 by Eckerd College at Hurricane Field, while the men fell 1-0 to No. 5 Tampa at Columbus State.

ECKERD 2, GSW WOMEN 1

Callie Pederson scored a pair of early goals for Eckerd and the Lady Tritons (1-1) were able to hold on for a 2-1 victory over Georgia Southwestern on Sunday afternoon at Hurricane Field.

Pederson knocked in her first goal in the 16th minute when GSW goalkeeper Courtney Allison was unable to recover after knocking down a loose ball 12 yards out.

Emily Johnson delivered a pass to the middle of the field 106 seconds later that Pederson was able to convert to a score after a 1-on-1 drive against Allison.

The Lady Hurricanes cut the lead in half at the 38:01 mark when Meghan Ward punched in a loose ball in front of the goal off a Courtney Simpson corner kick.

GSW was unable to convert a couple of chances to tie the match in the second half and both sides were held scoreless the rest of the way.

Allison made five saves for GSW. The Lady 'Canes were outshot on goal, 7-3.

Southwestern hosts Florida College on Friday at 4 p.m. in the first match of the Quality Inn/Hurricane Invitational.

No. 5 TAMPA 1, GSW MEN 0

The Hurricanes gave No. 5 Tampa all they could handle, but a late score gave UT a 1-0 win on Sunday in Columbus.

Daniel Bergstrand knocked in a rebound from 19 yards out off of a free kick in the 73rd minute to help UT escape with the victory.

In a defensive struggle, Tampa (1-1) held a 6-1 shots on goal advantage for the match. Corner kicks were tied at 4-4.

GSW goalkeeper David Porley made five saves as the Hurricanes fall to 0-2.

Southwestern returns to action on Friday with the first of two games in a weekend Florida swing, meeting St. Leo at 7 p.m.
